Snapchat Breach Exposes Millions of Names, Phone Numbers
Shapchat, the photo messaging application developed by Stanford University students, was hacked on Tuesday. The application allows users to send text messages, pictures, and videos that self-destruct just seconds after being received–a feature that has given it a reputation for making “sexting” safe. But a data-breach on Tuesday published the names and phone numbers of 4.6 million Snapchat users on a public website. While this isn’t a Target-like security breach of credit card numbers, users of the application expect a certain level of privacy, and even if you don’t care if people know you use the app, no one wants their phone numbers revealed on the web. It’s unclear yet whether any photos remain, and some say the hack may have cost the company founder $4 billion dollars. Thoughts?
As many as 4.6 million users of Snapchat have had theirusernames and phone numbers downloaded by a website calling itself SnapchatDB.info.
